Metal-on-metal construction has increased wear and tear.

Simply put, a screw fits and holds better in a thicker wood plank than in a thin sheet of steel. Add seasons of rain and frost to the equation, and both pieces of metal start corroding. However, screws driven into wood beams have less exposure to the elements and therefore less chance for corrosion.
